My Internship at SAS

May 2019 - August 2019

In the summer of 2019, I had the privilege of being a Technical Intern at SAS. It was an incredible opportunity to be able to work in an environment that prides itself on excellent company culture and employee engagement.

Throughout my internship, I was able to cultivate a sense of teamwork in various aspects. In the office, I was paired with two mentors apart from my manager, which allowed me to understand my projects better and also gain insights into professional development. Throughout the campus, SAS held events for interns to connect and grow. From attending resume and LinkedIn workshops, to running down Fayetteville Street in a Downtown Raleigh scavenger hunt, SAS was a truly formative experience in the ways that I interact with my colleagues and advance in my career.

Hack for Good

During SAS's first ever Hack for Good Hackathon, interns had the opportunity to explore and visualize open data from the United Nations, and begin to be experts in humanitarian issues which face our world today.

In my team of 5, we dove into the issue of rising adolescent fertility rates, and gained insight into the educational, environmental, social and economic factors which might affect these rates. It was an incredible experience to see how interns decided to use data to tackle these concepts and use SAS Studio and SAS Visual Analytics as a tool to present and share findings. Ultimately, my team was able to showcase our findings as a finalist group.

Intern Expo

As a Mapping and Imaging Technology Intern, my project aimed to provide support for alternate map projections, as well as modify the Jenks Natural Breaks algorithm, a method of data classification that is displayed through map legends. Through this project, I refined my programming and debugging skills in Java and C and learned more about the interesting field of map and data visualizations!

In addition to working at SAS, I learned it! I received my Base Programming Using SAS 9.4 Certification after completing two courses: Essentials and Data Manipulation Techniques, and passing the certification exam at the end of the summer.
